Paid Patriotism  Investigation

Paid Patriotism is an investigation of fabricated national identity in the sports games. As a case study, the project demonstrates the tactics that official communities have used to fabricate national identity and patriotism at the Super Bowl in the US. Through the use of design as a convivial tool — a term put forward by Ivan Illich — the role-playing board game PITCH simulates current sports economic activities that fabricate and sell national identity. This game gives audiences opportunities to play with this financial structure. There is both an online website and an offline workshop that is also able to open discussion for audiences and help to reframe national identity within sports games.

This website offers an easy-to-download version of all the research materials and board game, everyone is welcome to have a look. If you are interested in the editable board game files, please write to me on designhaozhang@gmail.com
